Eurydice

I think what I really enjoyed about this play was the fact that it was so absurd. It reminded me of one of our first days in class- when we discussed Broadway musicals and how they were so crazy. Why are we okay with this? Because the absurdity throughout is used to transport us into another world. Eurydice is a play that accomplished that for me.

I loved how Eurydice’s character is so human- in an 'unreal' story. For me, the characterization was the best part- the diction throughout kept me in love with the relationship between her and the men in her life, influencing the choices that she makes. For instance, in scene 15 when Eurydice and her father are talking about when he was little- I got as in to his story and tune as much as she did. Their interactions were refreshing.

Orpheus and Eurydices' relationship is really interesting- and in the context it's pretty evident that they're speaking two different languages. Cool idea on the writer's behalf for two lovers.

  1. i really like what you said about absurdity transporting us into another world! i think you are totally right in the sense that the only way outlandish stories or exuberant musicals work so well is because the audience is in on the fantasy. the only way those stories or performances work is if the audience is able to leave reality COMPLETELY behind and leap into this new world. if the play takes on the theme of zany but is not crazy enough the audience will not be able to lose themselves in the experience.

  2. Tell me more here Susan! Why is this play unreal and absurd? How does Eurydice feel real/human in contrast? How does the play show us E&O are speaking different languages? What kind of diction are you talking about? Good start. Nail this down.

I think what you said about the playing being a bit absurd really ties in with what we were talking about in class - how the play has a comedic tempo, but it talks about very non-comedic topics, and really isn't very funny. It seems like such a lighthearted play, but really isn't. I think that's one of the reasons why it seems so absurd.

And I think you raise the good point of making the characters human, even in a completely unrealistic play. Naturalistic plays aren't the only ones that can create characters we can relate to.

  4. Susan,

I totally agree with your views on absurd atmosphere transporting an audience. I think it does this because it is all new and exciting, and you are on an adventure in this forign world with the characters. I also liked your point about Eurydice's relationship to her father. I think a lot of monologueing technique was used here to engage the audience into the stories he tells.
